Five Reasons Everyone Should Read Whisper To Me by Nick Lake

Hello, guys!

I recently read Nick Lake’s latest novel Whisper To Me and I absolutely loved it. I think it’s one of my favorite contemporaries I read this year! There was just something so emotionally gripping about this novel that left me perpetually page-turning til the end. Nick Lake is truly talented and Whisper To Me left me breathless, touched and awed. I don’t want to give away too much about this book but here are five reasons you should pick this book up right now.

love letters + nick’s writing

One of the many things I loved about this novel, was its format. Whisper To Me is a long, d3oej1drawn-out love letter written by Cassie, who is the main character of the novel, to a boy she meets during a dark period of her life. Whisper To Me follows the story of Cassie’s previous summer in which, she went through multiple horrific events, which scared her mentally. Throughout the course of summer, Cassie hears voices, which causes her to do irreversible things and it leads Cassie to a downward, mental spiral. This story is a love letter and apology to the boy she meets. What I love about the format, is how genuine the book feels. It honestly felt like I was reading a private love letter. From the start, the novel jumps straight into an apology and the reader is left questioning what happens and throughout the story, we see the unfolding of all the events that happened to Cassie that summer. I literally felt like I was the boy reading the novel, it felt so personal and deep at the same time.

the emotions

There is something so intriguing about reading a book that tugs multiple emotions all at once, which I why I love books such as All The Bright Places and The Infernal Devices. All these books, unleash a whirlwind and roller coaster of emotions, whilst you are reading it. Whisper To Me did just that. About three-quarters through the novel, I knew I was going to be left emotionally unstable by the end of the book. Throughout the novel, I got attached to the characters. I really don’t want to spoil it but I can safely say that I had a gaping hole when I finished it. I shed a few tears and at the same time, I was so happy and proud of the main character. I felt every possible emotion whilst reading this book and it was one of the many reasons why I loved it.

mental illness from a deeper perspective

This book dealt with a lot of mental illness but from a very personal perspective. We never really get a proper diagnosis for the illness Cassie has throughout the novel but it definitely felt like PTSD and Schizophrenia. Not many books deal with this kind of mental illness, especially one from a personal point of view. It was really interesting to see how Cassie dealt with and how it really came to be. I’ve never really had a proper understand about how people deal with PTSD and Schizophrenia and how much it effects the people around them, although Cassie didn’t have full on Schizophrenia I really enjoyed understanding what she dealt with and it was so interesting to read about it.

the thought-provoking ending + book hangovers

e32e2mYou have probably heard a lot from other posts, that I adore thought-provoking novels. Especially the ones that leave you with an intense book hangover. I haven’t had a book hangover in ages and when I finally got one with this novel, my heart and emotions were not okay. I literally devoured this novel and my head was spinning by the end. I loved the ending and how realistic it was . Whisper To Me is so unique that you can’t help but feel attached to the events and characters in the book. I was left thinking about what happened in this novel, over and over again. If you are craving a book that will leave you with a book hangover, this book will definitely be for you.

whisper to me is unique in so many different ways

Yes, I am using one of the most cliche things in book reviewing but I’m not joking this book is so unique, fresh and different. I have never read a story like this and I honestly can not search or rack my brain to find one to compare to this one. It’s so wonderfully unique that you can’t help but love it. The themes dealt with in this novel are hardly touched on by other authors. The main character, Cassie is so different to a normal YA contemporary protagonist and the plot of this novel is unlike anything I have read before. Like I said before, this novel is an apology and love letter to a boy Cassie had harmed but loved during that horrible summer and throughout the novel, I was gripped.

Each element to this story is like an ingredient to a perfect concoction. There are obviously little flaws in the story which got my annoyed or frustrated but overall the positives outweigh the benefits and I discovered that this book was amazing by the end of it. Anyway, I really hope you pick this novel up. I honestly can’t recommend this book enough. I was definitely not disappointed!

have you guys read this novel before? what were your thoughts?

“Love Letters + Pretty Covers” Teaser Tuesdays & Exciting News

jij'

Hello guys,

This is a very late Teaser Tuesdays  but I am back again to share with you my latest read! If you didn’t know teaser Tuesdays is where I share with you a teaser from a current read and my current thoughts on the novel. Lately, I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump (it sucks 🙁 ) but I’ve been reading:

whisper to me by nick lake!

File_000

Recently, Bloomsbury sent me a copy of Nick Lake’s Whisper To Me and I just started it a few days ago but because I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump, I’m only on page 25. Whisper To Me is a long love letter from a girl called Cassie who has messed up her relationship with her boyfriend. She hears voices everyday and she doesn’t know who they are from but she just wants her boyfriend to come back. I like to go into novels without knowing much. Hence, I’m predicting that this novel will be a mix of a cute contemporary that deals with mental illness. Whisper To Me is unlike any novel I’ve read before. It really is a love letter and it feels like I’m reading someone else’s journal. I’m really enjoying it so far!

March Obsessions and April Excitement!

ihoj

Hello, Guys!!

Sorry for not posting much this week, it’s the last week of school (Yes!!) and I have finally gotten the chance to sit down to write this blog post. Since it’s the holidays, I am planning on getting lots of reading done and crossing off lots of books on my TBR! I can’t wait to sit down on my bed and binge read lots of these novels!

what’s going on in my life

March has been an eventful and chill month for me! (I know it’s weird) The first half of my month was quite ordinary: I was following my daily routine, completing assignments and school work and working out. However, the second half was quite hectic: tests were flying, I had a sports injury and my stress levels were soaring. Holidays just started! (Yay!!!) Hopefully, this holidays I’ll be very productive in terms of completing holiday homework, managing my blog and reading lots! The holidays will be ending mid April and after the holidays, I’ll be having school exams happening. I can’t believe this year has already gone by so quickly, which is both good and bad. I’ve been keeping a diary, and being the kind of person that never sticks to a schedule, I’m pretty happy because I have actually managed to keep a calendar filled with dates and it’s been sooo helpful!

favourites: music

I’ve been listening to a lot of new music lately that is a bit different to what is played on the radio. You can listen to my songs on the left! As you can see there is still Shawn Mendes on my favourites, and this is only a snapshot of my playlist. I still have many of his other songs on my playlist but I’m loving Strings at the moment. XO by Beyonce is a bit old but I rediscovered it again and I am loving it! If I were to recommend three songs you should listen to it would be:

  • Undress Rehearsal by Timeflies
  • Borderline (Vanic Remix) by Tove Styrke
  • Wild Things by Alessia Cara

favourite books this month

DSC_0236_Fotorhu9oiI’m so ashamed to say that I actually haven’t been reading much this month but I did read Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare, which took me longer than I intended but I did manage to finish it and I absolutely loved it! I linked the review but if you haven’t read this yet, you must because it is my favourite read of the month! I also read Emery Lord’s When We Collided which I really enjoyed! I’m part of the blog tour for this novel and I’ll have a review up soon! It was a great book and it kind of reminded me of the Museum of Intangible Things! I also just finished This Is Where The World Ends by Amy Zhang and it was a unique and fresh read that I needed. It was different to what I normally read and it had lots of John Green vibes! A review for this book will be up too! I’m reading Me Before You and I’m nearly done with it. I really liked Jojo Moyes’ discussion for the themes in this book, hopefully, I’ll love it as much as everyone else did by the end of it.  I got lots of books this month but I want to make a video on it and so I won’t be putting a book haul in this month!

blogging life!

For my blog, I have been uploading quite a bit (except for this week hehe!) and hopefully, I can still continue to write more and more posts, especially since it’s the holidays. I think I’ll also start putting out some lifestyle posts too because I have lots of lifestyle post ideas swimming around in my head and who knows maybe it’ll become both a book and lifestyle blog by the end of the month, but I’m still working it out! I’ve been planning on starting a youtube channel for ages and I think I might film a video in the next few days and try it out! It’s just the whole filming, putting your face and voice out to the world, that freaks me out. I love talking and chatting, though and hopefully, it’ll turn out okay! For my channel, I think I’ll make it both lifestyle and book for sure. It may have a different name to my blog but who knows? I might not even follow through with the idea!

On my bookstagram over @hashtaglovebooks.alicia, I’ll be doing the #alyssaandaliciaapril2016 challenge! I’m hosting it with @alyssaisreading (I’ve linked her blog!) and I’m super excited! If you are looking for a good April challenge, you should totally join our challenge! We would both love to see your photos! Another exciting piece of news is, we’re nearly at 2K, which is unreal because I just started my account at the end of last month! I don’t know how I feel about my feed at the moment *sigh* but hopefully, it’ll get better!

goals for next month and what’s to come for april:

Hopefully, April will be one amazing month. As I have mentioned before, I’m trying to get lots of books read and I also want to write lots for my blog. I really want to get my study habits down because I’m still learning new tricks every day but with major exams and assignments coming out soon I want to establish and cement some good study tips and time management skills before the tests begin. I’ve been wanting to do a lot more sport lately because sport and running are somethings that relaxes my racing mind. I tried boxing this month and I absolutely loved it. I think I might find a gym I can sign up to and try some more boxing classes or circuit training.

how about you guys? how has your month been? what are your goals for april? link your monthly wrap-up below i would love to see it!
